Choosing the Right ATV Helmet
While in the subject of
ATV safety, we cannot stress enough the importance of choosing the right helmet for the road. A helmet can make the difference between an anecdote and a fatal outcome, which is why you need to have the best protection for your head. We at
Rotorhead Lubes give you some pointers to know what to look for.
Certifications
Legitimate ATV helmets will have certifications by different institutions, and the stamps will usually be located at the backside of the helmet, near the bottom. The most common are DOT, SNELL and ECE 22.05, which we detail below.
DOT Certification
The most common certification for North American Helmets, DOT stands for Department of Transport and it follows a set of guidelines known as the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #218, FMVSS 218 for short. To earn this certification, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA randomly selects helmets from different manufacturers and subjects them to visibility, impact resistance, penetration resistance and other tests to ensure their quality.
SNELL Certification
The non-profit Snell Memorial Foundation runs several tests that are quite similar to those required for the DOT stamp of approval, and after deeming the helmet safe it certifies them with the label SNELL M2010 plus certain special codes to specify the activity they were made for. However, SNELL certification isn't mandatory for the manufacturers.
ECE 22.05 Certification
ECE, which stands for Economic Comission for Europe, is a standard created by the United Nations and accepted in several countries; 22.05 is the number of the set of regulations it follows. These helmets are subjected to much the same tests DOT candidates are, except for the puncture testing, which is replaced by a deformation test to evaluate the helmet's rigidity.
Conclusion
When choosing a helmet, remember that it's an investment in your personal integrity and even your life. Pick one that has at least one of the aforementioned certifications and that fits snugly around your head, not too tight or too loose.
